In brief
As a literacy consultant practitioner Gareth is passionate about quality learning experiences for all children. He has an in-depth understanding and wealth of experience from each strand of influence from the Early Years through Primary and Higher Education. He has a proven track record of improving outcomes for children and has made notable contributions to school improvement, nationally, locally and within and across schools in both England and Wales. He develops Teaching Assistant interventions that are rooted in pedagogy and informed in his weekly classroom literacy teaching, in which he makes a point of modelling effective approaches to teaching and learning alongside practitioners. This year he is also working on the Exploring Boys Literacy Project with the National Literacy Trust.
Gareth’s experience
Gareth has been employed within Education for 16 years both as a teacher / Deputy head and as a consultant. He is presently working with Pie Corbett and John Stannard (OBE) on the EEF’s Primary Writing Project; helping to implement a structured programme that trains and coaches teachers and leadership teams on the effective teaching of writing. Within his previous role as a National Strategies Adviser for Language Literacy he delivered contextualised, pertinent and quality training to a broad range of national audiences. It was within this role he designed and wrote a range of published supporting materials around the development of literacy and language. More recently he has become an accredited Every Child Counts National Adviser with Edge Hill University and has co-authored a Wave 3 Reading intervention.
Exposure
Numerous conferences with National Literacy Trust, Every Child Counts, Early Years Matters and workshops for a range of audiences which include Head Teachers, LA Advisers, Teachers, Teaching Assistants, NQT’s. Higher Education: Edge Hill University supporting student teachers.
